Jean Genet's The Maids

Filled with self-loathing and driven by desperation, the titular characters in Jean Genet’s groundbreaking play create elaborate and highly eroticized fantasy worlds in response to a lifetime of abuse. Their increasingly ruinous role-play is a trenchant statement about the accident of birth, the searing brutality of class distinctions, and the liberation that stems from destruction.
