Diversifying the Classics is delighted to announce the second edition of Los Angeles’ Festival of Hispanic classical theater, LA Escena 2020, now in a largely virtual mode.
Since launching our biennial celebration in 2018, we have been planning for this new opportunity to present Hispanic classics, from inventive productions of the original texts to translations and adaptations inspired by the Golden Age.
Amid the devastating theater closures over the past few months, we have been impressed by the resilience and creativity of artists who have found possibility in adversity. The new forms and collaborations that have emerged in recent months inspire and entertain, and we are excited to share innovative works that draw from centuries of tradition to find closeness and connection despite our current distancing.
This special-edition, largely virtual festival includes artists from Mexico City, Madrid and Málaga in Spain, as well as New York and Los Angeles in the US, all exploring new directions in theater practice across a number of platforms.
While the pandemic makes it impossible to bring the international and East Coast artists to LA in person this time, they will be with us in work taking place mostly online and via an exciting site-specific, socially-distanced experience created for LA.
Though we will all miss the chance to experience LA Escena in person, this virtual version will reach an audience across the globe. We have also established new partnerships to make this all possible—in addition to our original association with UCLA, A Noise Within, and Playwrights’ Arena here in Los Angeles, we have also received support from Acción Cultural Española AC/E, Hispanex, Teatro Soho CAIXA Bank (Málaga), Teatro de la Abadia and Nave 73 (Madrid), and the Festival de Almagro.
We hope you will join the LA Escena 2020 program online November 12–16 for a unique and unforgettable experience.
Despite the physical distancing, the show must go on, in English and in Spanish, in your place as in mine. We are so excited to convene, and look forward to seeing you there.

Diversifying the Classics se complace enormemente en anunciar LA Escena 2020, la segunda edición del festival de teatro clásico de Los Ángeles, ahora en versión casi enteramente virtual.
Desde que lanzamos nuestra celebración bienal en 2018, hemos estado planeando esta nueva oportunidad de presentarles los clásicos hispánicos, desde las producciones más creativas de las obras originales hasta traducciones y adaptaciones del Siglo de Oro a nuestros días.
Frente a las clausuras devastadoras de los últimos meses, nos ha impresionado la fuerza y creatividad de los artistas que han encontrado la forma de seguir creando ante tanta adversidad. Las nuevas formas que han surgido en estos meses nos inspiran y entretienen, y nos anima la idea de compartir obras innovadoras, que mobilizan siglos de tradición para brindarnos una conexión a pesar de la distancia que debemos mantener.
Esta edición del festival, casi todo virtual, incluye artistas de Ciudad de México, Madrid y Málaga en España, así como también Nueva York y Los Angeles en los Estados Unidos, todos ellos explorando nuevas direcciones a través de múltiples plataformas.
Si bien la situación actual hace imposible traer estos artistas internacionales y de la Costa Este a Los Ángeles en este momento, estarán con nosotros a través de sus obras, casi todas ellas en la red y una a través de una emocionante experiencia creada especialmente para nuestra ciudad.
Aunque todos lamentamos que no podremos experimentar LA Escena en persona, esta versión virtual del festival le llegará a un público mundial. Hemos establecido nuevas colaboraciones para lograrlo–más allá de nuestra sociedad con UCLA, A Noise Within, y Playwrights’ Arena en Los Ángeles, también nos apoyan Acción Cultural Española AC/E, Hispanex, Teatro Soho CAIXA Bank (Málaga), Teatro de la Abadía y Nave 73 (Madrid) y el Festival de Almagro.
Esperamos que se unan a LA Escena 2020 en línea del 12–16 de noviembre, para una experiencia única e inolvidable.
A pesar del distanciamiento social, el show debe continuar, en español y en inglés, en sus casas como en las nuestras. Nos ilusiona vernos todos allí.
