Noise Now Partner Feature: Brown Fist Productions
By A Noise Within September 25, 2020
Our Latinx Heritage Month celebration continues with another Noise Now partner feature. If you missed Brown Fist Production’s Aztec opera El Circo Anahuac last summer, you’ve got another chance to see it! We’ve received an update from Maria Elena Yepes about their ongoing development of the opera.
David Reyes and I have expanded El Circo Anahuac. When he finishes writing the music, David calculates that the opera will be 1:10 to 1:15 hours long. We’re very excited about this!
Regarding our updates: In August 2019, of course, we were Artists in Residence at A Noise Within, where we worked on expanding the opera and having a performance at the Rehearsal Room.
We had the performance on August 12th, when we introduced a new character and five new songs. The Rehearsal Room—which normally accommodates 80 people—had 110 in the audience, and 12 people had to be turned away for lack of space! David and I were very pleased with the results. We drew a supportive and encouraging audience, and we made lovely new friends at ANW.
The pandemic halted our plans for 2020, as it has for most theater organizations, but we are staying positive and moving forward to complete the opera and get ready for the opportunity to produce it again. We had planned fundraisers in March and July of this year, and performances at the Shannon Center and at Shoenberg Hall, UCLA, but we had to postpone all of them.
On November 4th at 7pm, we will be guests on En Casa con LA Plaza, an online series presented by LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. We will be discussing El Circo Anahuac and sharing updated versions of our current songs and discussing new songs. If time allows, we may have a brief performance by two singers and two dancers. Follow El Circo Anahuac on Facebook to receive ongoing updates!
