Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are in Rehearsals
By A Noise Within
September 14, 2018
Trapped in a play within a play within a play. Flipping coins that always come up heads. Stuck in Shakespeare Purgatory. Such is the ill-fated destiny of our two heroes, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
As we found out in first rehearsal, every aspect of the play will amplify the cat-and-mouse game that looms over the characters. The scenic, lighting, and projection design will create an abstract cosmic world, rooted in familiar objects like Greek amphitheater seats and a ship’s prow, but with an ethereal backdrop of galaxies.
The costumes will be fantastical, elaborate, and frolicking in the fun of metaphor – from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern having basically the same outfit, to Gertrude’s poison-purple hair, to the Tragedians dressed in animal skull heads like they are death incarnate. And then let’s not forget the contemporary Danish folk music in the background!
It’s thrilling. It’s eerie. It’s hysterically funny. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead opens next month. What are you waiting for?
